In an age when technology has revolutionized everything, going cashless seems to be an obvious choice for the sheer convenience it brings with it. But the founder, CEO, who visualized it and gave it life, struggled to bring forth a revolution in mobile commerce.

Meet Vijay Shekhar Sharma, a child prodigy from Aligarh in U.P, India, who rose from a humble background to own a company whose current value stands at $3 billion (2016). Since then, he has come a long way gradually bagging the Best Businessman Award (in 2016 by GQ) and the Best Entrepreneur of 2016 (by ET).

Background Information:

Vijay completed his higher secondary examinations while he was just 14, something that testifies to his prodigal qualities. But the road that followed was filled with tough moments. He struggled with the English language (because of his education in Hindi medium) when he enrolled for a graduation at the Delhi College of Engineering. This made a topper slacken and ended up with supplementary papers that did not allow him to grab a job soon after college.

But, Vijay was a tough nut and would not give in so easily. He started reading Hindi and English versions of books simultaneously to master the language—which isn’t as easy as it sounds. This made sure he could read two books at the same time—a rare feat and in due course, master the English language, his first step to success!

Gradually, he diverted all his attention towards the Internet and learned how to code on his own. In no time he was able to build a content management system with the help of friends that was used by the Times of India. This success gave him some motivation, but unknown to him at the time, some misfortunes were afoot. He started a small business with his friends but they left him bankrupt, conning him off 40% of Rs. 8 lakh that he had raised through his venture. As you can imagine, that was not a small blow to someone who was just starting out in entrepreneurship.

How Paytm was Born:

In 2000, he launched One97, a company that delivers mobile content and commerce services to mobile consumers through telecom applications and cloud platforms. From here, there was no looking back. It was as if the dark clouds had begun to disappear gradually bringing in rays of hope and success for Vijay. He started experimenting with 3 basics of Internet—content, advertising and commerce. Under the flagship of One97, Paytm (Pay through mobile) was launched in 2009.This was the largest online recharge portal. His board was, however, not convinced about entering the payment ecosystem yet. Vijay took the giant step, purely based on his conviction that the real challenge lies in doing what others think you cannot do, rather than just going by what others want you to do.

Vijay’s prime motive was to have satisfied customers and make their life ‘cashless and easy’.

At the outset, he built a strong customer care team that could answer customer queries and drive them to trust the unknown. Gradually news spread through word of mouth and PayTM started creating visibility through social media platforms to cater to customer’s needs on a priority basis.

Apart from customer focus, Vijay gives utmost importance to having a strong, motivated team on board. He ensures that the right people are recruited and has even given 4%of his equity (approx. 120 million) to the team members, whom he always addresses as colleagues rather than employees. All this has contributed to the growing success of Paytm and has helped it secure Series A funding exceeding $100 million.

The story of Paytm and Vijay doesn’t end here. Economic Times declared him as the ‘Hottest business leader under 40’, and he received an honorary doctorate from Amity University in Gurgaon. In 2014-15, Paytm launched its new App for wallet and Uber and IRCTC tied up with Paytm to use its wallet. Not just that, Paytm raised funding from Alipay financial for M-commerce and wallet, followed by Mediatek the next year. It has now become a household name and people are using it to book movie tickets, travel, shopping.

Inbound Marketing is widely touted to be one of the most effective marketing methodologies online. Purely from a marketers point of views inbound is placed in high regard due to it’s high return on investment. While details about inbound are too vast to explain in any one article, this one tries to highlight the definition and need of a Landing Page.
What is a Landing Page?
A landing is a website. A lot of people seem to confuse this quite easily (probably because it’s being called something different, it’s easy to infer that it could be something different). A better way to describe landing pages would be to call them very ‘brief’ websites. It’s called a Landing page because it’s where users end up ‘landing’ – they visit this page from other points in social media or the internet. The main purpose of this landing page is to quickly and completely explain it’s purpose.

1. A landing page quickly puts out the point that it wants to make. A visitor has no need to actually dive deeper to get his questions answered.
2. Sometimes a doesn’t necessarily have questions and could be just browsing through. A landing page, through the user of clever iconography can capture the users attention and ultimately give you something you didn’t know you needed.
3. While landing pages are often misconstrued for catalogs, the addition of Call To Action buttons across the page negates this point.

4. Specificity. This has got to be one of the best reasons to have multiple landing pages. If you business is catering to a wide variety of audiences, which it probably is, it makes perfect sense to assume that one landing page is not going to apply to all of them. I mean, you’ll try but, it’s just going to end up in a clusterfudge (for lack of a better term). So to make things more specific, you can easily cater to that demographics particular needs.

  • Interviewing-Asking the right questions and listening. Earlier interviews were conducted face to face. Video calls via skype or WhatsApp has altered interviewing remarkably.
  • Conducting a survey online with short, but relevant questions. For this, tools such as Google forms, Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, Wufoo are used.
  • Social networks and blogs -These immensely useful tools were not available to companies earlier.   • ‘Get 10,000 Fans’ used a tool called Qualaroo, recommended by Neil Patel (entrepreneur and co-founder of Crazy Egg) to collect various kinds of feedback from customers without being too invasive. They use this feedback to develop a new product or service which has resulted in amazing strides in customer satisfaction.

Times have changed and the so have feedback methods. What remains unaltered is the role of feedback to change a product, a business, or the way companies think and act.

How To Set Your Pricing – 6 Ways To Consider Pricing Your Product or Service

Pricing a product is one of the most challenging tasks startups face. Most of them initially want to keep it low to attract an impressive customer base and never raise it for fear of losing valued customers. You will often find a correlation that suggests that growth is stunted due to monetization.

While your competitor’s pricing strategies are a good indicator, it may not necessarily be what is right for you. Assess your product and create an impressive strategy that facilitates the revising of your product/service prices periodically.

Margins are often reduced to create a better flow of stock.

Example : Commonly seen with mid to high range smartphones, the price of a leading model with the topmost specs is lowered when an upgraded version of the phone is released. This ensures that the next set of adopters are able to stay in the tech wave rather than missing out because of expensive pricing. In turn, they continue to aspire for the higher range of technologies and  repeat customer cycle is established.

  1. Odd-ending: Sometimes, you notice prices set at $2.99. This has an impact on the buyer’s psyche and compels purchase. This phenomenon is called psychological pricing. You will see a very high rate of adoption when it comes to this strategy – In 1997, a study published by the Marketing Bulletin suggested that over a little over 60% of advertising material mentioning costing had the ending digit as 9 i.e. .99 is some way.

    If the sales are slow, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the prices need to be slashed. It could also mean that the gap between the price and its perceived value has increased.

 

Remember, no two customers will view your products equally. In fact, while making a purchase they fall back on a judgement they’ve already made rather than analysing too much on buying something new (snap judgement). Therefore, you may think it is overpriced, while others may be willing to pay extra for additional features. Understand how customers use your product and what compels them to pay for additional features. LinkedIn, for instance, introduced power search and ability to contact other members as part of it premium account plans which brought in huge profits for the company.

Cash flow optimization is the process of regulating the burn rate to ensure an extended and safe runway period. Startups are almost always cutting closer to the edge, so it’s always useful to have a number of fail-safe strategies up your sleeves.

Why You Need To Obsess Over Product Market Fit

So why should you care about Product Market Fit?

Short answer : Because if your product isn’t completely useless, it has a market. It’s probably not unique either. So there is a good chance you don’t have the answer to “will your product sell?” right out of the box.

You need to check for product market fit.

Long answer

Obtaining product market fit automatically is unheard of. You may have thought of some really cool ideas, and sure you said to yourself that no one is doing this right now. Part of your mind is already thinking of ways to take advantage of this.
But then you think “Wait a minute, why hasn’t anyone done this before?”. It comes as a bit of a thought twister and you begin to wonder if you’ve missed a step. Those who seem to fixate on the uniqueness of their idea in time realize that some version of it has already been attempted. It might come as a shock, that it may not have worked out so well. (After all, 90% of startups globally do encounter failure in one form or another)
If you are lucky, your idea will pass this test and you will not have to go back to the drawing board (there is a good chance you will, and this is a good thing). But there is flip side to this situation. Now you have an idea which is not validated for all the other factors that you haven’t considered. A lot of uncertainty, in fact, the larger the scale of the idea the larger the uncertainty.
Enter Product/Market fit. This is a near fail-safe strategy that can help ensure you have considered everything and especially the important stuff. This strategy can be broken down into 4 steps, follow them and you should feel a little more certain about your idea :
1. Define
Define a goal. And not a vague one.
The goal needs to have a degree of periodicity. This characteristic is important because you are focussing on growth. Another important characteristic is that you account for factors that directly or indirectly contribute to growth in some way, otherwise tracking unnecessarily will just pointlessly complicate the process.
For example : Set down a goal in the following way – ‘Get 500 paid installs across 3 buyer personas each and have them use to app at least 2 times every 3 days. Increase the number of installs each week by 20%
This is a clear and precise goal that can be tabulated and tracked.
2. Measure
Now that you know what your goals are, it’s time to note the metrics that directly or indirectly affect them. Make your life easier by assigning a third party tool to track these, if possible. As an added advantage, this tools often have benchmarking services that let you know where you are in the race.
Companies such as Kissmetrics and segment.com provide many such tracking tools. Of course, don’t over complicate things; if you are tracking basic metrics from your website, its best to rely on Google Analytics (it’s free).
Now it’s always good to go the extra mile and be really sure. Often, the best way to do that is to ask or observe your users. The Customer Development Survey by Sean Ellis is a phenomenal way to know some of the key details you would want to track.
3. Break Down
No, not the mental one. This is one is far more complex. This phase takes everything you are doing and arranges them in a collectively exhaustive, yet mutually exclusive way. All your processes, your end results, everything. It forces you to assess each step and work on the same (or at least put it on the roster, so when the time is right you work on it nonetheless).
Dave McClure shares a brilliant tactic termed AARRR process.
Namely, Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral and Revenue. Most ideas have all of these things to worry about and there is a very high chance your app does as well. By separating everything you do under these processes, it gives you a clear view of how things are going and how you have the capacity to improve the same.
4. Maximize
Over several iterations of the above 3 steps, you will have a list of things that work really well for you. It’s now time to bring out the big guns. Growth hacks are usually the best ways you can maximize your returns (no matter which phase your company is, read here why growth hacking is especially important for early stage startups).
Over a course of time, and adhering to the above processes, you will see that your original idea is either nowhere to be seen, or has significantly changed (If you are really lucky, it will stay exactly the same). Do not despair, you still have an idea that has attained Product Market fit and your chances of success have definitely increased.
