All you need to know about google webmaster tool

Hey, got an awesome website or planning to made one? Have you submitted it to the google webmaster tool?

Why – because if you are not doing this, you are leaving lots of dollars on the table.

Yeah, it’s that simple.

Webmaster tool will ensure your presence in the google search result page (SERP). If someone who is looking for product/services you sell/provide will saw you in SERP will lead to your website. Now, it’s your job to get this lead converted to get the revenue/profit out of it.

And this is FREE – literally free.

Here we are all talking about Google’s organic results.

Organic — simply mean without paying anything to google.
Oh, does google charge for giving us results?
Well, Google is a search engine, it provides the best result for the queries made.

On search engine result page (SERP) there are both Paid results and organic results. Google keeps the both organic and ad result relevant. There can be first 4 paid search results at max. that can be easily identified.

So, what to do on google webmaster tool /search console

  1. Signup for the Google Webmaster
  2. Add your website
  3. Verify your property i.e. website

Okay, so now you can see the search console dashboard.
Don’t forget to add Title, meta description and other meta tags. It is something that will shown up in google results.
Now, we need to tell google about all the pages on our website. so we need to 2 things.

  1. Sitemap (xml file)
  2. Robot.txt

Sitemap is simply a map/flowchart of our website and this let google know the structure of your website and understand the links between different web pages.

Go to Crawl>Sitemaps(in left menu) >Add/test Sitemap (red button on right top corner)>put down the link where you have uploaded the sitemap.

Now, you can see in Sitemaps — No. of pages indexed and submitted.

Submitted pages are which we have given to google via sitemap and Indexed pages are which google have indexed for the search result.
But indexing doesn’t mean that you will be shown in 1st page and you will get the traffic.

robot.txt

Robot.txt tells what to access and what not to. By this, you can block google bot to access those files.

Google Index section:

  • Index status: status of pages google have listed/indexed
  • Remove URLs — This helps to remove URLs Temporarily.
  • Blocked Resources — Report of the resources blocked to google crawling by robot.txt

Search Traffic Section:

Search Analytics

Shows you what people have searched (query) that leads them landed on your search result.
It also provide number of impression, clicks, average position and CTR (Click through rate i.e. clicks/impression*100) data — for particular query, page of our site, country, devices.

Links to your site:

Links that has your website/page link on their page also called Backlinks. Getting more backlinks from a good ranked website can help you to rank higher

Internal Links:

Connected links in your own website. You can simply find out all the links that are coming to a particular page.

International Targeting:
